CVS 100 Introduction to CV Imaging (Fall 2026)

Course Description:

This course is an introduction to the anatomy of the cardiovascular system and cardiovascular imaging. It focuses on real time 2-D imaging of the heart, lower extremity veins, extracerebral arteries and the abdominal aorta.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

 

·         Identify anatomy and relational structures of the heart and vascular system.

·         Describe blood flow through the cardiovascular system.

·         Explain basic cardiac hemodynamics.

·         Describe the technique and imaging planes for performing a transthoracic echocardiogram.

·         Identify cardiac anatomy on a transthoracic echocardiogram.

·         Describe the location and phase of the cardiac cycle to perform 2-D echocardiography measurements

·         Explain the difference between color and spectral Doppler

·         Compare pulsed wave to continuous wave Doppler

·         List the Doppler images required for and TTE

·         Explain the sonographic differences between the arterial and venous system.

·         Describe the anatomy and sonographic appearance of the lower extremities venous system. 

·         Explain the technique to identify deep venous thrombosis of the lower extremities and describe its appearance.

·         Discuss the anatomy and sonographic appearance of the normal carotid arteries.

·         Describe the sonographic appearance and technique used to evaluate the abdominal aorta.

·         Recognize an abdominal aortic aneurysm sonographically.
